VI. MUNDIAL de Caballos de Paso CONFEPASO 2003
November 13. - 17.th I had the extraordinary opportunity to be personally present at VI. Championship
of CONFEPASO of horses de paso, celebrated in Colombia´s Medellín - the town of Eternal Spring.
The place of championship was choosen really well. Medellín with 3 millions of inhabitants is the capital
of departament Antioquia and is famous as one of the most traditional and best areas of horse breeding.
Paisas, as are generally called the inhabitants of Antioquia, really love their horses
and their passion for horses can be easily seen each day. Some idea what horses signify to them could be
obvious from this years´s Cabalgata - in the collective ride through the town participated more than 12.000 riders.
In this championship participated 746 horses and was seen by more then 32.000 visitators.
Program started each day at 9. A.M. and finished about the midnight, but after 11 A.M.
it was practically impossible to buy an entrance ticket.
Each breed was judged according to following cathegories,
stallions and mares separatelly:
- mares with colts
- colts at halter 18-24 months
- colts at halter 25-30 months
- young horses in training process 31-36 months
- horses 37-48 months
- horses 49-60 months
- horses 61-77 months
- horses over 77 months
The winners of last 5 cathegories then competed for the most prestigious and most appreciated title
Absolute Champion of each breed. In paso fino colombiano took place competitions Bellas Formas and
Paso fino Performance which are not normally organized in Colombia but form part of the competitions of CONFEPASO.
The atmosphere was phantastics. The visitors tremendly applauded each good exhibition and the whistle
immediately informed each rider about the fault or mistake he commited. The Championship was - as always
- also the comparison of quality of local and foreign horses. Again was confirmed that the colombia´s horses
are the best in the world, no doubt about it. In spite of the fact that in the Championship did not participate
about the half of Colombia´s TOP TWENTY horses, their horses clearly won all disciplines.
The value of the results and judgments is confirmed by the fact that all discipline were judged by 5 judges
and only one of them was Colombian, others were from other states of Confepaso. There was nothing to envy
to the judges because the number of horses in each cathegory was high - for example in mares
37-48 months competed 47 exemplars! Horses in each cathegory arrived to the arena and were observed
all together and was made first selection. Then were choosen about 10-12 best horses and those were
evaluated one by one. The performance of the horses and their riders were really excellent and elevated
adrenalin to the audience which gave free way to their emotions and tremendous applauding and whistling
complicated yet enough difficult task of judges. It is necessary to say that the knowledge of the
colombian public is very high and in absolute majority of cases their opinion was equal to the opinion of judges.
We witnesses some top performances when judges had to come to seldom used forms of aditional tests to be able
to distinguish between excellent horses - in these opportunities it was totally impossible to hear one´s word,
the decibels of vocal reaction of the public were destroying my ear drums, the typical white hats were flying...
The championship was very important also from the point of view of future way of breeding and judging -
if will be maintained traditional colombian´s approach and preference of horses which when maintaining
the maximum riding comfort still move forward covering the ground and distance what is the main purpose of any horse,
or what evaluation will be given to pure show exhibition so applauded in the U.S.A. Results are clear -
still remains valid traditional colombia´s point of view and top evaluations are given to the horses which
fullfill it. In the competitions were also presented several horses performing the gait "preference in U.S.A."
which received some applause from small part of public, mainly from abroad, but these horses were either
disqualified or finished with low evaluation. I am personally glad about it and the conversations
with the judges confirmed me that they want to hold this approach and preserve the qualities
of paso fino colombiano including outstanding stamina and resistance which make them so valuable in long
"cabalgatas" in the countryside. It is known fact that overcollected horses practically not moving
forward are no proof nor guarantee of a quality as they frequently fall apart when they are permitted
to really advance loosing coordination and - riding comfort. I am sure that no real paso fino lover
would like to hear degradaying comments "its just a toy, no horse" about pasos finos heard in U.S.A.
mainly from quarter owners and others, that are the results of impressions of circus-shows organized there.
Naturally no pinto was presented, the position of CONFEPASO is clear - no pinto could be considered paso fino.

This Championship, extraordinary by its quality and number of participants,
was terminated by traditional and very impressive "PARADA DE CAMPEONES",
when were presented together the champions of all cathegories, complemented by the presentation
of 23 years old Capuchino and finished with Colombia´s anthem.

Exhibition "Horse of 2003"
We would to inform all interested horsemen that Bonachon and Islera will be presented
in the prestigious exhibition "Horse of 2003" at the town Lysá nad Labem,
about 1 hour east of Prague, at 19. - 21. 9. 2003.
Bonachon & Islera at PARDUBICE 2002 (CZ).
For the first time in the history the paso fino colombiano was presented
at 6.-8.9.2002 in the course of the famous Great Steeplechase of Pardubice
during the "HORSES IN ACTION" exhibition. Bonachon del Rey and Islera del Gavilan
were shown first at halter and then Bonachon showed to the thousands
of visitors what it is paso fino colombiano under saddle.
Judging by the cheering of the enthusiastic audience the success was great.
Big applause received 9 years old Filip who presented stallion Bonachon
just in bosal and without stirrups. Thank to the permission of the director
ing. Černý Bonachon and Islera could take a close look to the most famous
and probably most difficult steeplechase jump in Europa - Taxis -
and Bonachon could gallop in full speed the course of the "Devil´s Race" -
Great Steepleachase of Pardubice what he really enjoyed.
